Solidarity…

I have been touched by the gestures of solidarity toward Newtown, Connecticut that have been evident from around the world.  TIME magazine posted photos of some of the vigils and tributes. The television show The Voice started its show earlier this week with a somber, dignified, respectful, and understated performance of Hallelujah by the coaches and show contestants as a remembrance of the victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School.   Churches have held special masses and prayer vigils, athletic events have taken a moment of silence, and today comes news of a what the Providence College basketball team did to honor those who were lost.

The team’s coach enlisted the assistance of Nike to have special uniforms made in preparation for yesterday’s home game.  Nike delivered by providing green and white uniforms with jerseys that read Sandy Hook where the players’ names would normally go.  Right down to the players’ shoes (green and white sneakers) and the green ribbons in the cheerleaders’ hair, Providence College’s basketball team sent a message.

Additionally, the college put green ribbons on the chair backs of 26 empty upper-level seats under a banner that read “Newtown, Connecticut: We Have You In Our Thoughts and Prayers.”

I don’t know that there is much of anything that can console the broken hearts of those who have lost so much in Newtown, Connecticut, but I hope that the solidarity from around the world reminds them that they are not alone in their grief. I hope that in some way each small gesture helps provide support and healing.

Day one thousand two hundred and sixty-one of the new forty – obla di obla da
